performance and practice in worship
So in working on a dissertation on ideas of performance I have long been plagued by people who say, "that sounds interesting ... how is it different from [action/practices/praxis]" i was delighted in conversation with Jim Lemler this morning to hear him give me a perfectly clear and workable differentiation of the two concepts, {paraphrase alert} "I have really appreciated your emphasis on performance especially as you differentiate between practice and performance ... when I reflect on what Anglicans do I think that we perform and that our coming together in worship in this way is one of the things that allows us as a disparate group of people to come and stay together." Inherent in this statement is an approach to practice which recognizes the rote rehearsal of practices as potentially divisive. I think that in Anglican worship (like Anabaptist community) it is the performative nature of the event that gathers us. The web is probably like this too. (Actually I'm convinced it is but I'm following DW's lead into the realm of the possible)

The sinners are much more fun!
